Delivery in Australia: Two-Day Shipping Is Dead. Shoppers Want It Today

Delivery in Australia: Two-Day Shipping Is Dead. Shoppers Want It Today

Do you remember when getting something delivered in two days felt incredibly fast? Yeah, those days are long gone. It’s 2026, delivery in Australia has changed completely.

Same-day delivery is now just the basic standard people expect.

The numbers are pretty wild: 73% of consumers say they prioritize delivery options of two days or fewer, according to research by ChannelAdvisor.

It’s a wake-up call for business.

In this article, we’ll get into why this happened, what’s behind it, and how your business can actually keep up.

How Did Speed Become the New Normal?

Australian shoppers are tired of waiting days for a package. Younger shoppers, especially Gen Z, have no problem switching to a different retailer just to get faster shipping.

Contrary to popular belief, this didn’t happen overnight. It started back in 2017 when Amazon landed in Australia and promised next-day delivery.

Today, Prime members get free same-day delivery on orders over $49, and every other retailer has been scrambling to keep pace ever since.

The big players set the standard.

  • Woolworths offers same-day grocery delivery across most metro areas.
  • Kmart has rapid delivery and Click & Collect down to a science.
  • JB Hi-Fi delivers electronics same-day in capital cities.
  • Bunnings moves fast when you urgently need that one thing for a weekend project.
  • Marketplaces like Catch.com.au are pushing aggressive same-day options.

When giants like these move that fast, customers start expecting it everywhere. The market numbers back this up.

Australia’s same-day delivery market is projected to experience significant growth, increasing from approximately AUD 1.52 billion in 2025 to nearly AUD 2.98 billion by 2034.

Retail demand and instant gratification are driving that growth.

Why Does Everyone Want Their Stuff Now?

Understanding the why makes it easier to plan instead of panic. The answer is very simple: Life is busy; shopping is expected to keep up.

When someone runs out of something important, like a phone charger before a trip (or even during a trip!) or a last-minute gift, they think in hours, not days.

Same-day delivery also directly impacts revenue, while reducing cart abandonment and bringing customers back IF the experience feels seamless.

Speed is also now a loyalty builder and more than half of shoppers in Oceania will switch retailers if those ultra-fast delivery expectations aren’t met.

If your competitors are faster than you, you risk becoming irrelevant.

Delivery in Australia: What this means for your business

For retailers of any size, same-day delivery moved on from being optional when it began to directly affect revenue and customer loyalty.

It goes something like this:  More completed sales > Higher average order values > Fewer ā€œwhere’s my order?ā€ support queries > Stronger brand loyalty.

Interestingly, reliability often matters more than raw speed. Customers want to know their order will arrive when you say it will, whether that’s in three hours or by evening.

We saw this with our own research: What Customers Really Want From Delivery (Hint: It’s Not Just Speed)

There are a few ways to get the speed and reliability balance just right:

  • Using physical stores as mini warehouses.
  • Offering clear delivery windows.
  • Partnering with courier platforms instead of building fleets.
  • Investing in tracking and real-time updates.
  • Planning ahead for peak periods like Christmas.
  • Exploring eco-friendly delivery options.

Australia’s logistics ecosystem has finally matured enough to support this. Shoppers now get the benefit of route optimisation, GPS tracking, proof of delivery, etc.

All these integrations have made same-day delivery realistic, especially in cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

The Smart Way to Meet Expectations

Offering same-day delivery doesn’t mean buying vans or hiring drivers.

This is another topic I explored recently: How Smart Teams Improve Last-Mile Delivery Without Adding More Vehicles

The smartest move is partnering with a platform that already has the infrastructure.

Zoom2u gives Australian businesses a simple way to offer same-day delivery without the overhead.

They provide real-time GPS tracking and flexible delivery windows (including 3-hour options!), plus a network of vetted couriers operating 7 days a week across major metro areas.

It also helps that Zoom2u has been rated one of the top courier services for three years running, on Product Reviews

With transparent pricing and no hidden fuel surcharges, Zoom2u makes it easier to deliver at the speed customers now expect.
